Make room for the way you want to use your deck

Where will you step outside, and what will you see from the house? Maybe you want room for a table, a clear route to the yard or a railing that leaves the view open. We can work out the deck's shape and stair location with you before a board color settles the whole plan.

Then look at that color where the deck will actually sit. A sample under showroom lights can look different in afternoon sun, and dark composite boards can get hot in direct light. If you'll use the deck barefoot, compare a few colors in the exposure that matters to you. Shade is part of the decision too; we would rather discuss it now than make a blanket promise that any board will stay cool.

Choose composite decking that looks and feels right at home

Let's compare the composite boards available for your project. Look at the color, surface texture, profile and edge treatment, then ask us to name the exact collection in your proposal. A brand name on its own won't tell you how the finished deck will look or which installation details apply.

TimberTech also makes Advanced PVC, a wood-free material rather than a composite collection. We can compare it separately if that is what you want. Natural wood is another choice if you value real grain and a surface you can refinish. The right composite board needs to look and feel good at your house, with a care routine you are comfortable with.

How board patterns shape composite deck installation

A straight run of boards, a diagonal layout and a picture-frame border do not ask the same thing of the framing. Board ends, borders and stair treads need support in the right places. The selected product's instructions also govern joist spacing, gaps and compatible fasteners. We plan those details with the frame rather than assume every composite board installs the same way.

The boards are the walking surface, not structural framing. We offer wood, steel and aluminum framing with concrete footings. We will talk through the deck's height, support, railing posts and any connection at the house as part of the complete design. A new surface alone cannot answer whether an old structure is suitable.

Plan the surface, stairs and railing as one project

We offer deck design, foundations, framing and installation for new decks and full replacements. Stairs and railing can be planned with the surface; lighting or a deck cover can be considered while the layout is still open. The proposal needs to say which of those pieces are included, along with any removal of the old deck or other site work that applies.

If your main need is to replace a handful of boards or resurface an otherwise sound deck, that is a different job. Our composite-deck service is for the whole new build or replacement, not a standalone repair or resurfacing visit.

Know what your composite deck estimate includes

The collection and board pattern affect material and installation choices, but they are not the whole estimate. Size, height, footings, access, stairs and railing also change the work. On a replacement, ask what happens to the old deck and whether removal is included. If you are comparing proposals, check that they name the actual decking selection and the same frame, rail and stair scope. A lower board price does not tell you what the finished project includes.

We can discuss timing once the site, board choice and approvals are clearer. A selected color that needs to be sourced, a changed layout or an association review may affect the start; we will not give a construction date based only on a photograph.

Find the right permit path for your property

The permit path depends on the property and proposed structure, not the word “composite.” The City of Spokane publishes residential deck submittal guidance for attached and detached decks. Your mailing address alone won't tell us whether the property is inside city limits; unincorporated Spokane County has its own application path. We offer deck drawings and permit acquisition, and we'll identify the right jurisdiction and who submits each item for your project. If an association has its own review, that is another step to discuss before setting a schedule.

What should your composite deck builder plan beyond the boards?

We plan the work beneath the boards too. That lets us discuss a border or diagonal pattern alongside the support it calls for, and talk through railing and stairs before the surface plan is fixed. A 3D deck model is available when it would help you see the layout. We'll name the selected board and the parts of the build included in your proposal, so you can compare complete projects rather than vague brand labels.

For ideas, browse our deck gallery. Look at how stairs meet the yard and where railings frame a view. The gallery does not identify every board collection or job location, so a photo is a starting point for a conversation, not proof that the pictured deck uses the composite product you want.

What happens before your composite deck is built

  1. Talk through the yard and how you will use it

Show us the door, the sunniest part of the proposed deck and where you would like the stairs to land. Tell us whether this is a new deck or a full replacement, and what you want to change about the old layout.

  2. Settle the board choice and define the build

We can compare the composite options you are considering, then work through board direction, frame, stairs, railing and any lighting or cover in the agreed scope. The exact collection matters before we settle spacing and fastening details.

  3. Confirm the drawings and approval path

We check the property jurisdiction and proposed design, then discuss permit and any association review. Our proposal should make clear what is included and what remains a decision before construction can be scheduled.

Check product coverage and workmanship terms separately

A manufacturer's material coverage depends on the exact board collection and its written terms. Before you commit, ask us what product documents apply and what the installation agreement says about workmanship. The boards, railing and frame do not all come under one blanket product warranty.

Your composite decking questions, answered

Are Trex and TimberTech the same composite decking?

No. They are different manufacturers, and the brand name alone does not identify a composite collection. Ask us to confirm which boards are available for your project and to name the selected profile and color in the proposal. TimberTech Advanced PVC is a separate wood-free material, not a composite collection.

How will a dark composite board feel in direct sun?

It can feel hot. Look at a sample in the sun the finished deck will get, especially if you expect bare feet on the surface. Color and shade both matter; we cannot promise a particular temperature from the brand name alone.

Can I choose a diagonal pattern or a border?

We can discuss either as part of the design. A change in board direction or a border can change cuts and the support needed under board ends. We would check the selected collection's current installation requirements before fixing the pattern and estimate.

What kind of frame and fasteners will my composite deck need?

The composite boards need structural support beneath them. We offer wood, steel and aluminum framing. The board profile, layout and manufacturer's current instructions help determine spacing, gaps and compatible fasteners for the proposed deck.

Does the City of Spokane handle every composite deck permit?

No. First we need to establish whether the property is within the City of Spokane or another jurisdiction. The City publishes residential deck submittal guidance, while unincorporated Spokane County uses its own application path. We offer permit acquisition and drawings, with the submission responsibilities set out for your project.

Can you put composite boards on my existing frame without rebuilding the deck?

Our offering is a new deck or a full replacement, not standalone resurfacing. On a replacement, the support and board requirements belong in the new plan rather than assuming the old frame will work. Tell us about the existing deck so we can discuss the full scope.

Does composite decking need cleaning?

Yes. Composite avoids the recurring wood-finish work, but dirt and debris still need to be cleared. Follow the care directions for the exact collection you select, especially when choosing a cleaner or brush. We do not offer a standalone deck-cleaning service.

Consider shade and shelter while the layout is open

Our deck services overview shows decking, stairs and railing together. If shade or shelter may change where you sit, see our deck covers and bring that idea into the early design discussion. We can plan those decisions while the composite board and deck layout are still open.
