Covers & Shade

Custom Pergola Builder in Spokane, WA

Dynamic Decks builds custom pergolas in the Spokane area for homeowners who want an open structure and partial shade, not a roof that keeps out rain. We plan attached or freestanding layouts around the place you sit, with cedar, Douglas fir and aluminum among the selected material options.

Start with the shade, not the shape of the beams

An open pergola can shade a table at one time of day and leave it in full sun later. Show us when you use the space and where the chairs go. We can then talk about the frame's position and spacing without promising shade all day. Rain will come through the open top. If you need to keep the table dry, we should look at a roofed cover instead.

Attached or freestanding pergola installation

Attaching to the house can put shade close to the back door, but we need to check whether the connection is suitable. A freestanding pergola can make a sitting spot elsewhere in the yard, with its own posts and footings. Neither choice works well if a post blocks the walkway or keeps someone from pulling out a chair. We settle the seating and post locations together before setting the span.

Thinking about putting a pergola over an existing deck? The surface boards do not tell us what the framing and foundation can support. We need to assess that structure before deciding how new posts would work. A new deck or patio surface is a separate part of the estimate, not something to assume comes with the pergola.

Choose the material and style after the layout works

Cedar and Douglas fir give you two wood looks and finishing decisions. Aluminum has a different appearance and care pattern. A classic or gable-style pergola may suit the house, or we can work out a custom arrangement. We will settle the actual material, finish and frame details with the support plan, not ask you to pick a silhouette that cannot fit the seating area.

Check the property before deciding on permits

Your mailing address does not necessarily put your property inside city limits. The City of Spokane and Spokane County have different residential review paths, and the answer also depends on what we propose to build. We start with the parcel and the design, then identify the applicable review and any association requirements. An open top does not, by itself, settle the permit question. The proposal should make the filing responsibilities clear.

What goes into a pergola estimate?

Size and height matter, but so do access, material, footings, a possible house connection and any changes to an existing deck. We start by looking at the spot and the shade goal, then work through supports and the actual scope. That gives you a useful basis for price and timing instead of a standard promise that may not fit your yard.

Custom pergola FAQs

How much shade will an open pergola give me?

It depends on the sun, the position of the frame and the spacing overhead. Tell us the hours you expect to use the seating area, and we can plan for those hours rather than promise constant shade.

Should I attach the pergola to my house or let it stand alone?

An attached design needs a suitable connection to the house. A freestanding design needs independent posts and footings. We compare both against the seating location and the available support.

Can you build a pergola over my existing deck?

Possibly, once we've assessed the deck framing and foundation for the added structure. Good-looking deck boards are not proof that the supports can carry pergola posts.

Does the City of Spokane require a permit for my pergola?

That depends on whether the parcel is within the city and on the proposed structure. If it falls under county jurisdiction, Spokane County has its own review path. We check the location and design instead of assuming an open pergola is exempt.

Do you work with cedar, Douglas fir and aluminum?

Yes, those are selected material options for pergola construction. We can compare their appearance and upkeep with the design you want, then identify the selected material and finish in the proposal.

Would a patio cover make more sense for me?

If you want rain kept off the seating area, yes, compare a roofed cover. An open pergola gives changing shade and an open feeling overhead, not a dry place to sit in a storm.

Tell us when you want to use the space

Show us the table or chairs, the time of day you want shade and whether staying dry matters. Request a custom pergola estimate, and we can plan the right overhead structure for that spot.
