Plan a wood deck around your house and yard

Think about what would make the space useful to you. Is it a table outside the back door, room to sit with friends or an easier way down to the yard? The door height, shape of the lot and view from inside help us decide where the deck and stairs belong. You may choose wood for its natural grain and color, but the layout is what makes the deck work every day.

Walk us through where you would like to sit and how you would move between the house and yard. We can settle the layout before you have to pick a species from a photograph.

Choose cedar, redwood or hardwood for the look you want

The name of a wood species is only a starting point. The grade, board profile and finish affect what you will see from the house. We can compare the boards available for your project and name the selection in the proposal, so you know what is being priced.

Cedar and redwood

Put cedar and redwood samples next to your siding or trim. Look at their color and grain in the light where the deck will sit, then compare the board grade and profile. If you have a finished color in mind, let's talk about the finish and whether it is included in the proposal. Those details matter more than asking for “wood decking” on a quote.

Selected hardwoods

We also offer selected hardwoods, including Ipe. Tigerwood or Cumaru may be worth discussing if the boards and profiles you want are available for your project. Compare actual samples and material prices rather than assuming every hardwood looks or costs the same. We will confirm the species and sourcing before promising a particular board.

There is a care trade-off with natural wood. Plan to clear debris and clean the boards, and discuss the finish for the species and site you choose. If you would rather not maintain a wood finish, we can compare composite or PVC instead. We do not offer standalone staining or maintenance visits.

Plan the frame beneath the wood boards

The boards are what you notice first, but they need the right support underneath. We plan the height, spans, footings and any connection to the house for the deck you choose. We offer wood, steel and aluminum framing with concrete footings. Treated lumber may have a place in the structure; our current wood-decking options do not include pressure-treated boards for the walking surface.

We also look at how water will leave the area. A low deck can have limited clearance underneath, while shade and debris can keep parts of a site damp. Access, drainage and room for the structure to dry belong in the frame discussion, not as an afterthought once the boards are down.

Fit the stairs, railing and cover to the plan

Where should the stairs meet the yard? Will a railing change the view from the house? Where would lighting help you see the steps after dark? We can plan those details with the deck and show which options are in the proposal. If you are considering a deck cover, bring it up before the frame and permit approach are settled.

A full replacement also means deciding what comes out. We will discuss the old deck, the new framing and which stairs, railing, lighting or cover are part of the work. We do not offer small repairs or resurfacing as standalone projects.

Check the site and permit path for your deck

Your mailing address does not always tell you whether the property is inside city limits. The City of Spokane and unincorporated Spokane County have different deck-review paths. For a city deck application, the City of Spokane's residential deck guide calls for a framing plan, an elevation or cross section, and a site plan. Spokane County's fast-track deck guide has different criteria; a covered deck does not qualify for that route.

We offer deck drawings and permit acquisition. First, we need your address and the layout you have in mind. The height, stairs and a possible roof can change what needs to be submitted. If your association has its own review, we can account for that step and make clear who handles each submission.

Know what is included in your wood deck estimate

Two decks of the same size can involve very different work. The wood species and grade affect the board cost. Height, footings, framing, site access, stairs and railing affect the construction. Removing an old deck or adding a cover changes the scope again. We will name the agreed wood, any initial finishing work and the components included, so you can compare complete estimates instead of square-foot prices that leave different things out.

The design, chosen boards and permit or association path affect timing too. An uncommon hardwood may take longer to source than an available cedar board. We can discuss a schedule once we know the deck you want, rather than guessing from a photo.

How we start your wood deck project

  1. Walk the yard and talk through the layout

Show us the door, the grade, the view you want to keep and where the stairs should land. Tell us how you would use the space and whether this is a new deck or a full replacement.

  2. Compare boards and define the work

We talk through available woods, the frame, railing, lighting and any cover. If a 3D deck model would help you see the layout, that is an option. The proposal should spell out what is included and which choices are still open.

  3. Confirm drawings and approvals

We check which authority covers your address and what the proposed deck requires. If association review applies, we identify that step too. The drawings and submission plan should fit your property, not a generic deck sketch.

Questions about wood decks

How do cedar, redwood and hardwood decking compare?

They differ in appearance, sourcing, price and finish choices. We offer cedar, redwood and selected hardwoods, including Ipe. Ask for the species, grade and board profile in a proposal so you know what you are comparing.

How often will I need to clean or refinish a cedar deck in Spokane?

Sweep away leaves and other debris, and clean the boards when dirt or mildew appears. The finish and the deck’s exposure determine when refinishing makes sense. We will not give you a fixed interval without knowing the product and site.

Can my wood deck have metal railing and deck lighting?

Yes. We offer railing and lighting as part of deck construction. Tell us the style and where you would like light while we are planning the deck, so we can account for them in the design and proposal.

Do I need a permit for a wood deck in the City of Spokane?

It depends on the property and design. First we check whether your address is actually inside city limits. For a city deck application, the city’s guide specifies framing, elevation and site-plan details. We will confirm the applicable process for your project before construction.

Are cedar deck boards the same thing as a cedar frame?

No. Deck boards are the surface you walk on; the frame and footings support the deck. We offer different framing materials and choose a suitable support plan for the deck’s height, spans and connections. Choosing cedar boards does not mean the frame must be cedar.

When would composite or PVC make more sense than wood?

If you like the appearance of wood but do not want recurring finish work, it is worth comparing composite or PVC. Neither is maintenance-free, but you will not be caring for a natural-wood finish. We can compare them with wood against your budget and the way you want to use the deck.

Tell us about the wood deck you have in mind

Tell us where the deck will go, what you would like to do on it and which wood looks right to you. Request a wood deck estimate in Spokane, and we can work through the layout, boards and structure together.
