See how PVC decking complements your home

The board you like in a showroom may look different next to your siding, in your yard's light and against the railing you choose. Bring us a photo of the back of the house and tell us where a table or chairs would go. We can look at board samples there, talk through lighter and darker colors, and decide whether a border or a change in board direction would help the deck feel like part of the house.

Think about the stairs at the same time. A wide stair opening toward the yard makes a different deck from a narrow flight along the side, even with the same boards. We can plan those edges before we settle the board layout, rather than making the railing and stair details fit whatever space is left.

Know what makes a PVC board different from composite

PVC and composite can look similar in a photograph, but they are not the same board. TimberTech describes its Advanced PVC as polymer through the core and protective cap, with no wood filler. Its composite decking uses organic material such as wood flour with polymers and a protective polymer cap. A PVC cap on a composite board does not make the entire board PVC.

That distinction matters if you specifically want a wood-free walking surface. It does not mean everyone should choose PVC. Composite has its own colors, textures and price options; natural wood has grain you can refinish. We can compare actual samples for your project and put the selected manufacturer, collection, color and board profile on the proposal. We will not assume that every TimberTech board is the same material or has the same instructions.

PVC deck installation depends on the board and layout

Board direction, borders and the place where two boards meet affect the finished look. They also determine where the frame needs support. For TimberTech Advanced PVC, the manufacturer's guide calls for attention to board ends, fastening, spacing and airflow; the details depend on the product and the layout. We would settle those choices with the support plan, not pick a fastening method just from a photo of a finished deck.

The boards are only the surface. Footings, joists, beams, the connection to the house when applicable, and the posts that support a guard still have to fit the design. On a deck close to the ground, clearance and airflow deserve attention as well. PVC boards do not waterproof the space below or make an old frame suitable for reuse without assessment.

Plan for sunlight, window reflections and shade

Look at where you expect to sit in the afternoon. Darker decking can feel hotter in direct sun, and shade changes how a color reads beside the house. All deck surfaces can heat up, so we would rather compare a sample at your property than promise that a PVC board stays cool.

Some energy-efficient windows can also reflect concentrated sunlight onto a deck. TimberTech's Advanced PVC guide has additional framing and fastening instructions for affected areas. If a window faces the proposed deck, we can check its position while choosing the layout and the exact board. A deck cover is another design choice to raise early: it changes the look of the space and may change the structural and permit plan. It is not a substitute for checking window reflection or following the selected board's instructions.

See what goes into a complete PVC deck estimate

We will look at size, height, access and the support the site needs, then price the actual board selection and layout. Stairs, railing, lighting and a cover should be identified as included or separate choices. If this is a full replacement, we will discuss what happens to the old deck and what the new structure includes. We offer new decks and full replacements, not a standalone board-repair or resurfacing visit.

The collection and profile you select, material availability, the design and any review needed for the property can also affect timing. We can talk about a schedule for the defined work instead of treating a picture or a square-foot figure as a complete estimate.

Know whether city or county reviews your deck plan

Your mailing address alone won't tell us whether the City of Spokane or Spokane County reviews the deck. For a city project, the City's deck submittal guide calls for a framing plan that shows footing details and a site plan locating the proposed deck relative to property lines. The County has a different fast-track deck guide, and a covered deck does not qualify for that fast-track route.

We offer deck drawings and permit acquisition, but the submission plan starts with the property address and the proposed design. Tell us if you have association requirements too. We can identify the documents and agree on who handles each step before work starts.

What your PVC deck builder needs to know about the site

  1. Show us the yard and how you want to use it

Tell us where you would sit, which door you use, where the stairs should end and whether you are building new or replacing a deck. We will look at height, access, windows and space beneath the proposed surface.

  2. Compare the boards and set the scope

We can compare a PVC sample with composite or wood if you are still deciding. Then we work through the chosen board, color, border, frame, railing and any lighting or cover you want priced. A 3D model is an option when seeing the layout would help.

  3. Confirm the drawings and approval path

The selected design and property location tell us what documentation to prepare and which authority to check. We can also account for an association review if one applies. The proposal should make the board selection and included work clear before the build is scheduled.

Find stair, railing and border ideas for your deck

Look through our deck gallery for railing, stair and border ideas. A gallery photo alone does not identify the board material or collection, so show us what catches your eye and we can talk about how to get a similar look with the options available for your deck.

Questions about PVC decking

Is a TimberTech Advanced PVC board the same as capped composite?

No. TimberTech Advanced PVC has a polymer core and cap without wood filler. Its composite decking uses organic material such as wood flour with a polymer cap. We will name the actual collection in your proposal so you know which board and instructions you are comparing.

Will a dark PVC deck feel cool in a Spokane summer?

Not always. Darker colors can feel hotter in direct sun, and all decking can warm up. Look at a sample where the deck will be, including the times of day you expect to use it. We will not promise a cool surface based on a general material label.

Can my new PVC deck have a railing, lighting and a cover?

Yes, we offer those as choices to plan with a new deck. Tell us which you want at the start so we can account for the guard posts, stairs, lighting locations and any cover in the design and proposal. A covered deck can follow a different review path from an uncovered one.

Does the City of Spokane approve every PVC deck plan?

No. We first check whether the property falls under city or county jurisdiction and what the proposed deck requires. For a city application, the City's guide calls for footing details on the framing plan and a separate site plan locating the deck relative to property lines. The county has its own process.

Can you install PVC boards over my old deck surface?

Our PVC deck service covers new construction and full deck replacements, not a standalone resurfacing visit. We need to consider the frame and footings as well as the new boards. A new walking surface does not by itself tell us whether an existing structure is suitable.

When might PVC not be my best choice?

If you want actual wood grain that you can refinish later, compare a wood deck. If you prefer a different texture or price option, compare a specified composite board. We can put samples beside your home and talk through the whole project rather than ask you to decide from a material name alone.
